NEW YORK STATE EXTENDS DEADLINE FOR BLUE BUFFERS PROGRAM IN MASTIC BEACH.![]()
Blue Buffers is New York’s first statewide, proactive voluntary property buyout program, administered by the Office of Resilient Homes and Communities (RHC) in partnership with the Center for NYC Neighborhoods and Enterprise Community Partners.
Funded with $250 million through Governor Kathy Hochul’s historic 2022 Clean Water, Clean Air and Green Jobs Environmental Bond Act, the Blue Buffers Program funds the acquisition and demolition of properties in high flood risk areas.![]()
Properties are maintained as open space in perpetuity, which can create a “buffer” to help reduce flooding and storm damage in surrounding areas.![]()

Suffolk County is replacing the aging Smith Point Bridge with a new, state-of-the-art fixed bridge that will be constructed just west of the existing structure. The new bridge will carry William Floyd Parkway (CR 46) over Narrow Bay into Smith Point County Park—providing a safer, stronger, and more resilient crossing for generations to come.![]()
Originally built in 1959, the existing bridge has reached the end of its service life under current safety and engineering standards. After more than six decades of service, the new bridge will significantly improve safety, accessibility, and long-term durability.![]()
The new 1,812-foot-long bridge will be:![]()
Designed for a 75-year service life
Built with prestressed concrete beams and post-tensioned concrete piers
Composed of 11 spans, each approximately 165 feet long
Elevated to provide 55.6 feet of vertical and 100 feet of horizontal channel clearance for marine traffic
ADA-accessible, with a protected pedestrian and bicycle path
Supported by improved road alignments on both sides to enhance traffic flow
